I don't know where the cut off is or how it can be determined. It is a conundrum.<br /><br />Right now, all the retired numbers except for Don Sutton are players or mangers who spent at least some connection to the Brooklyn Dodgers. Tommy's was mostly at the minor league level. Also, they are all in the HOF except Jim Gilliam. I'm sure Gilliam is worthy of having his number retired but it is not one that we would guess if we didn't know.<br /><br />Fernando's tenure with the Dodgers was about the same length as Don Newcombe's. Should Newk's number be retired? He pitched in a much more difficult time and two of his prime years were taken by military service. Should Maury Wills have his number retired, Mike Piazza, Steve Garvey and others?<br /><br />I think that with free agency that retiring a number is going to get more and more difficult as players move from team to team. Fernando made a real splash, one we could use again.
