No, it's not a proud moment, but it was old school. Bob Gibson, Drysdale, Jim Lonborg, and plenty of players even today feel the same way.Harold Kasselmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09408152844042445666noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-969719124137500057.post-31108387042889875162020-09-07T07:54:11.601-07:002020-09-07T07:54:11.601-07:00At a reception for Hall of Famers in NYC some year...At a reception for Hall of Famers in NYC some years ago, Bob Gibson took exception to my claim that Koufax was a better pitcher because, unlike Gibby, he never threw at a batter. Gibson called Lou Brock over to our conversation and Brock recounted the incident, but said that Sandy’s fastball broke his elbow. Yup, Sandy just let his emotions take over, which was uncharacteristic of him.

Gotta run - bidding on a Ryu Hyun Jin card. It was a side of Koufax that few knew. He threw at hitters to protect teammates (e.g. the Skowron/Mays game and he retaliated against Brock because he made him look bad. One thing I didn't mention was that the Cardinals won that game 2-1, so Brock out and out beat him. Checking box scores of all Cardinals Dodger games after that event where Koufax pitched, I see no successful bunt attempt by Brock against Sandy, so I'm assuming that he didn't try it again. I also see no retaliation by the Cardinals to hit Sandy or his teammates after that event, but I could be wrong.Evan Bladhhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00882462203403645860noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-969719124137500057.post-28479700739444460602012-11-17T17:53:42.241-08:002012-11-17T17:53:42.241-08:00Well Evan, my response won't be popular. Brock...Well Evan, my response won't be popular. Brock wrote that Sandy wasn't a master at fielding bunts or holding runners on. Why not exploit that? Don't all players look to exploit the weaknesses of other players? Certainly bunting had a greater chance of working against Sandy than swinging away.

Sandy was punishing Brock for exploiting his weakness. That was not a proud moment for Sandy, in my opinion. He wasn't protecting a team mate. He injured a player by hitting him in the back, not in the backside or thigh, a fleshy part. Brock did nothing wrong. Brock didn't break an unwritten rule by bunting to break up a no hitter. I'm not sure there is an unwritten rule that young players shouldn't bunt at all.
Bluenose Dodgerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02803830130432084223noreply@blogger.com
